Tarpon Tips

Considered by many to be one of the most challenging and exciting fish to catch. A popular sport fish, a Tarpon is difficult to catch when it comes to fishing. Even experts consider it to be a challenge to catch these fish.

Most of the Tarpon fishing in my area is done off the beaches in the summer months. Although you can get them year round in some of the backwater canals and rivers. Try to find large schools milling around ,feeding off the beach and take your shot.Try  to get in front of moving schools and make a cast. Patience is the key for these fish. GOOD LUCK!

Safety Tip: if your going to fish for Tarpon off the beaches do it as safe as possible. Try to do this with a group of people so you can have more eyes on the water. The large sharks we have in our area would like to have them for a snack. If you have this encounter cut away the fish as quickly as possible.

One more tip when Tarpon fishing from a kayak. Please take the time to revive the fish. It may be some work but can be done with teamwork. You can head to the beach and walk the fish up & down the shore line or take turns towing the fish behind the kayak.
