Rigging Soft Plastics

Above you will find three different ways to rig a plastic Shrimp.

3" paddle tail

Above you will find 2 ways to rig a paddle tail soft plastic. I find that when useing a standard jig head your bait does not lose much action. With the jerk bait hook you will have a weedless presentation but be careful when choosing your hook size. If you go to big you will lose action in the bait.

Small Jerk Baits

Small jerk baits can be very productive. I prefer to use them with a weedless presentation.I find myself skipping these baits under docks and mangroves most of the time. But don't count them out on the open flats.

Large Jerk Baits

Keep in mind that with larger baits you will need to go with a larger hook or you may find yourself loseing fish. Weedless is your best bet, but you can rig these baits with a large jig head as well.

Popping Corks

There are many different popping corks on the market. You can get them weighted or non- weighted. Orange/yellow/green, it's your preference.Make sure you adjust your leader to the depth needed. You can use all types of baits underneath a popping cork.Your not just limited to soft plastics. It has been my experience that it is most effective if the cork is popped an average of every 5 to 10 seconds. People have caught fish popping more often than that, but the most consistent method is to use a less frequent pop. The principle here is to use the pop to attract fish, and then let the bait fall back down to be eaten. If you are popping constantly, it is possible to spook away the very fish you are trying to catch. One more tip, when using a popping cork or any bait for that matter always fish in the direction you are drifting in. You don't want your bait dragging behind the area where your boat or kayak has just drifted over.
